Schwebel Sucks Customer Reviews and Feedback
Schwebel's Bakery is a regional producer of bread and other baked goods that were established in Youngstown, Ohio, in the early 20th century.
An angry former employee shared his/her experience working for Schwebel on Indeed in April 2018:
"Poor Management, disingenuous. They came across as professional but was not in the least, they actually were the main culprit to spreading gossip and creating a hostile environment that led to very poor crew leader training. It took 3 weeks to train on a time frame that could have been met in a week if properly given a fair chance to learn and work for hands-on to correct any deficit. This store lacked culture, no diversity in many factors that left a click among employees. Therefore, no room for future career advancement. Work hours not guaranteed, unpredictable. Pay is totally unfair, only minimum salary wage After 10 months of employment you can get a $2.00 increase per hour as long as you decline benefits (ex. medical, dental, vision). This is a Union job, so expect $44.00 per month to come out of your wages plus initiation fee of $150.00. YOU are paying them to work there. The crew trainers were rude, unfriendly, leading to many controversies. It takes no brains to shuffle bread all day, the nightly banking needs were confusing with a very out-dated long processing technique. This store had a Sesame Street, Romper room mentality. STAY AWAY!"
Former Employee - Route Sales Representative says"Trucks constantly break down No Communication unless it's after the fact/too far to fix Long Hours No Opportunity to move up Favoritism Management over supervisor don't care about you"
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says"Tampering with 401k, wouldn’t provide reasonable means to service the stops, when we were provided good vehicles they still barely were safe enough to drive, would receive phone calls on every vacation just like you were still there, don’t try to get done early or try to look like a man (grow a beard) you’ll be written up and treated like the sinner of the year."
Current Employee - Supervisor says"the company is going out of business. CEO and senior leadership have no idea what to do."
Current Employee - RSR Route Sales Representative says"Poor Work environment, lack of management with no communication, long hours ,CONSTANT product shortages. Over the past few years they've taken our 401k floor plan, reduced our commission rate and made our healthcare more expensive while reducing it's coverage!"
Former Employee - Engineer says"Junk equipment, poor morale, management treats people horrible and talks about everyone. They lie all the time. Not realistic., Nasty working environment. Swear shop. Massive turnover the gets worse every year. Stay as far away"
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee says"Management has taken a huge fall over the past year or so."
Thrift Clerk says"They ought to be ashamed of what they're paying. In 2013 I made $8.15 an hour, just over minimum wage. In 2017 they're paying $8.80 an hour - wow - a whole 65 cents an hour more four years later, and still just over minimum wage. You're constantly putting trays of bread on and off racks and on and off shelves, bending, kneeling, and stooping. I came home with a backache every day. Never worked so hard in my life for so little money."
Former Employee - Lead Thrift Clerk says"I got hired to be the store manager of a store they knew was closing one day before they closed it they called me and told me they were coming down for a visit within 5 mins of them arriving I was fired for no reason and the next day the store was closed for good. Horrible people"
Former Employee - Sanitation Worker says"Management sucks, you will not have a life because you will always be at work"
says"extremely hot work conditions, lousy pay, 6 day work weeks, no set scheduled days off, no holidays off, you request to use a personal day or vacation day and they deny you 9 times out of 10, this place is inhumane to work for! They do not care about their employees at all and treat people like crap"
Got hurt on the job, now I can barley lift 10 pounds. (Former Employee) says"If you get hurt on the job, they don't support you in any way. They fight you tooth and nail to prove your not hurt, they don't care about anyone or their employees. Good pay but, they don't train right. This is good for about a year or two and if your 16-20. I like and enjoy hard work but, you don't have a life of your own. If you just wanna work your whole life this is the job for you.PayDon't care about employees"
Multi-level Float Operator (Former Employee) says"If you have no education, or have low expectations, this company is great. Only men advance and are not qualified. If you have a past history of spousal abuse or drugs you will fit in fine..NoneYou name it"
Tray stacker (Former Employee) says"It is very hot work long hours and expected to work everyday! No days off!! The management is a joke! I was trained to be aachine operator then moved to tray wash which is okay for a day or two but it's sooooo hot in that area it's next to the boiler room. I thought I was gonna dislocate my shoulder throwing bread trays. The hours for first shift is 4 am to 330 pm."
Agency Manager (Current Employee) says"District manager sucks, uper management sucks, they couldn't manage them selves out of a wet paper bag , unsafe work place, osha needs to shut them down, call laber relations, underqaulified management, no advancement , they should do everyone a favor and shut it down,if consumers really knew how dirty and disgusting the facility is, people need to be warned not to buy Scwebels product, health hazard, pass the wordNoneThe worst job ever"
Driver (Former Employee) says"What a joke of a company. They had me working only one day a week for over a month, almost 2 months. I found a new job so I put my two week notice in. They tried to act like they didn't know asking why I was leaving. Come on the higher ups I'm sure couldn't live off $80 a week. One of the nights they wanted me in to work, I got extremely sick so I had to report off and gave them plenty of notice. Yep they fired me just like that. Don't even bother applying as a truck driver here. They will lie to you telling you you will get 40 hours every week even if you ride with someone just like they lied to me. They kept saying it would pick up and get busy and never did. A lot of the drivers there for a long time are talking about leaving. There are articles online and also a lot of talk there from the drivers that they may be going under. BEWARE!!!NothingLow Pay, poor equipment, company future in question"
Production Worker (Former Employee) says"Managment is terrible. Sanitation crew is lazy so everything you work around is disgustingly filthy. Supervisors dont take action when needed, mandatory overtime because theyre constantly short handed. Split days off, hot in summer cold in winterPaid holidaysWork EVERY Holiday, rarely get 2 days off in a row"
Retail Clerk/Cashier (Former Employee) says"Poor Management, disingenuous. Corporate Accounts Manager/Sales Analyst (Former Employee) says"People now running company are some of the same people who put Wonder Bread out of business and they are doing the same to Schwebels. Closing agencies and laying people off. No loyalty or integrityFewMany"
Part Time Clerk (Former Employee) says"Minimum wage for a job that is a lot more work than what it appears to be. So much behind the scenes work that is not seen. Very unappreciative management. They want more and more done for .20 or .30 cent a year raise. Very small pay raise then healthcare cost goes up, union dues go up so you go 1/2 a step forward 3 steps back. Dead end job and union does absolutely nothing for the workers. Some awesome co-workers!!Everything including working along side of rodents"
Retail Clerk (Former Employee) says"Schwebel are the biggest cheapskates! It's 2018 and they can't even pay $9.00 an hour. I was making $9.00 an hour in an office 15 years ago. And don't think it's an easy peasy job and that's why they don't pay much. You'll have a backache when you go home from switching out bread trays and bending over changing bread from the front to the back all day long. Besides that, you have to keep track of every single loaf of bread that at the end of the day gets sold to pig farmers for a dime a loaf, and there's hundreds of loaves. Stop baking so much bread if you can't sell it!Hard work for little pay, no lunch room, no microwave, no fridge, no coffee pot"
Production Worker (Former Employee) says"They over work you, you’re just another number, management is terrible, they pay extremely low compared to the work you do. They don’t care about people getting higher education,.NoneEverything"
Route Driver (Former Employee) says"Management is horrible. You have to show up at around 3-4 am and stay till 2 pm for a salary that doesn't compensate your pay. If a store doesn't sell then it is your fault.NoneHours, management, pay"
Route Sales Representative (Former Employee) says"Management doesn't care about anything but putting more money in there pocket. Work you like a dog and management expects so much out of you while they sit in an office and play on Facebook. Management picks favorites and then requires everyone but that person to follow procedures. Work 60 hours a week for a good pay but not worth it in the endPay, vacation payManagement, hours, favortism"
Thrift Clerk (Former Employee) says"It was a bread carousel. Stocking loaves of bread on shelves only to remove them or recirculate them an hour later, and then another hour later. You were constantly shuffling bread. Then in the back room you had to account for every single outdated loaf of bread going to a pig farm that day. You go through rigorous testing which will ask you 50 different ways whether you intend to steal or not....they're worried about their pig bread that they sell to farmers for a nickel a loaf. Horrible!"
Route Driver (Former Employee) says"All the top dogs care about is putting money in their pockets, and the guys on the road get nothing but grief. The management is poor. They go after accounts that make no money instead of going after accounts worth the time and effort. I wish I had been warned before working there. I missed out on a lot of Saturdays with my girlfriend for that garbage."
Route Sales Representative (Current Employee) says"Low pay for the industry only 36k no commission in the near future 12-15 hour work days 6-7 days a week micro managed, depot manager is shady and goes behind your back and plusses up your order causeing more work for the same pay company refuses to update it's infastructure using an outdated system, even when u work hard and fast and get " done" early u are forced to stay until at least 2 in the afternoon, upper management ignores every issue complained to them everyone in your position is nice helpful friendly and works hard , manager plays arts and crafts all day and does an 1/8 of the work u do while getting paid about 70k a year jumping down your throat while u make 36kU meet nice stroehman guys who make way more then u doing lessLooooonnnggg days little pay"
Porter/Janitor (Current Employee) says"A typical day at work is random, sometimes there are good days and sometimes not, In a factory like this you may sometimes have to do jobs not in your department. I have learned allot from Schwebel's, including how to drive and operate a forklift, sky-jack, receiving , porter and production work. etc. As for Management, I am sorry to say it is very poor, That is a MAIN problem in the plant. There is no real supervision on the floor and when there is it is sporadic , some employee's work very hard and some walk around and do nothing while supervisors sit in meetings all day doing nothing to ensure fair work policy is taking place and jobs are getting done. Safety in the plant is also an issue as supervisors take into consideration what they think is an important issue and not what the employee's do, i.e. ordering stop signs for forklifts and not fixing a single small issue for harmful employment in six months when a red painted warning line would have suffused.( No person has been hit by a forklift in the history of Schwebel's as far as I know.) The hardest part of the job is not being able to do do it because everyone wants you to do what they want(management, in diff departments) and not your job. Workplace culture, doesn't exist, there is no unity in this company, at one time they may have been good but I fear it is to late for them to recover, no one cares anymore, though I try my hardest to do what I can. :( The most enjoyable part of the job is to be left alone and just do it.:)Some benefits, some insurance.401K is not matched by employer, employee's in the plant are not considered human."
Maintenance Technician (Former Employee) says"worked here for a while and they are a real hole in the wall company and a bunch of cheap owners, they will work you into the ground then make you fell bad for itnonework alot for little pay"
Mixer Operator (Former Employee) says"Company doesn't care about it's plant workers. You're looked down upon like a piece of trash. Negativity is horrible, not many people like their job and it shows.None20 min lunches, they'll cheat you on your paychecks if they can, union dues, employee retention, just to name a few"
Clerk/Cashier (Former Employee) says"A very physical and demanding job. Each year more and more work. added to the job with no compensation or little appreciation. The union is a joke. They are definitely company all the way. Schwebels is a family owned company and are only concerned about themselves . They look down on your average worker and will back stab anyone if it benefits the company. One clerk was written up because her father died and she left work early. Mind you she was a 14yr employee at the time. I could list many more but I really think you get what I'm saying.NoneLow salary, high union dues, heavy lifting, terrible schedules"
